Philippe Dagen
"Behind much of this Pre-Raphaelite overload is to be found the neglected figure of Gordon Hart, who, like many before, had been stimulated by Cennino and the recipes necessary to early Renaissance painting-griding one's own pigment, setting down one's own perfect gesso ground, burnishing the and-set gold leaf, rediscovering the lost techniques of egg tempera, studying the magical ratios of polypttychly subdivided surface, and on andon. Hart's career, thought checkered, was persuasive in the 70s, a prestige heightened through his friendship with Barnett Newman. "While he didn't get to run with the ball", notes Stephan, "he was the one who made the connection"." By Robert Pincus-Witten
