Le parcours de Gordon Hart

Gordon est né en 1940 à Glasgow. De 1961 à 1964, il étudie à la Central School of Art à Londres, d'où il sortira avec les honneurs. Puis en 1964, il intègre l'école Brooklyn Museum Art School, à New-York. Il croise alors tous les grands artistes de l'époque, d'Andy Warhol à Jason Pollock. En 1986, il s'installe à Lyon.

''Quoiqu'il vive à Lyon, Gordon Hart n'est guère connu en France. Fâcheuse ignorance. Il est en effet tout à la fois exemplaire dans sa génération et séduisant dans son évolution.
Des œuvres de 1973 à la laque industrielle sur toile, œuvres un peu minces où les lignes apparaissent seules sur fond monochrome aux huiles récentes, Hart s'est libéré des interdits hérités du minimalisme.

Celui-ci prescrivait-il des formes simples et des aplats neutres ? Hart expérimente des effets de coulure et de marbrure, il introduit des empâtements et des feuilles d'or afin d'enrichir sa matière picturale. Chaque image est construite par l'entrecroisement de diagonales qui dessinent triangles et losanges superposés dans un espace de plus en plus profond et aérien. Puis ces barres obliques s'effacent, recouvertes par une marée de couleurs qui s'amassent en nuages et flaques.'' Philippe Dagen

"Behind much of this Pre-Raphaelite overload is to be found the neglected figure of Gordon Hart, who, like many before, had been stimulated by Cennino and the recipes necessary to early Renaissance painting-griding one's own pigment, setting down one's own perfect gesso ground, burnishing the and-set gold leaf, rediscovering the lost techniques of egg tempera, studying the magical ratios of polypttychly subdivided surface, and on andon. Hart's career, thought checkered, was persuasive in the 70s, a prestige heightened through his friendship with Barnett Newman.
